I haven’t shared a recipe in a while so thought I would share another favorite recipe from my grandpa.
Grandpa used to make this for all the grandkids as a special treat for breakfast, an afternoon snack, or after supper dessert. BTW, the adults loved it also.
Ingredients
1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 cup white granulated sugar
2 cups milk
1 tablespoon butter
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
Directions
- Whisk the cocoa, flour, and sugar together in a saucepan until well-blended (no lumps of sugar or flour).
- Add the milk slowly whisking it into the mixture.
- Whisk until smooth.
- Cook over medium heat, whisking frequently, until it is the consistency of gravy (approximately 8 to 10 minutes).
- Remove from heat.
- Whisk in butter and extract until the butter is melted.
- Serve immediately over biscuits.
- Use a whisk throughout the mixing/stirring and you will not have any lumps.
- If the gravy gets too thick, you can add more milk a tablespoon at a time until it reaches the desired consistency.
- For a different flavor or if you don’t care for vanilla, you can substitute almond extract.
- You can substitute an equal amount of Stevia in the Raw, Splenda or any other sugar substitute for the granulated sugar.
- DO NOT use the flaky type of canned biscuits.
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask and if you try the recipe, as always, I would love any feedback you would care to give.
Hope you enjoy!
. With homemade or canned ‘country style’ biscuits. ?
ReplyDeleteI don't know what you mean ......... Lost in translation Cat. Can I have a pic?
LOL Callie...so sorry about that...biscuits over here are a type of bread.
DeleteHere's an excellent recipe for buttermilk biscuits (pictures included) http://www.tsgcookin.com/2011/03/country-buttermilk-biscuits/
Here are pictures of the canned 'country style' and 'flaky style' biscuits:

Ami shared a link for converting measurements and I have included it on the right side of my blog...above contributors.
Please feel free to ask if you have further questions.

LOL.... got it!..... Scones! Biscuits for us are what you call cookies. I can make scones with my eyes closed ;) You would have to be the words worst wife here to not be able to make them, I can make mine rise better than the ones in the picture too. I can't believe they sell them in cans!
DeleteCallie
Before you get too excited Callie...scones and biscuits are not exactly the same. I would suggest you read the recipe for biscuits (in the link) very carefully. If there are any differences, you might want to make the biscuit recipe.
DeleteIf you make the gravy with your scones, I would love to know how it turns out!
Blessings,
Cat
I read that recipe! That's scones! :P
DeleteThanks for letting me know Callie...I honestly thought they were a bit different from our biscuits. Learn something knew every day! ;)
DeleteOne of our rules is that I start eating healthier. Thanks a lot!
ReplyDeleteBea
LOL Bea...Sorry. :(
DeleteThis is actually healthier than a lot of treats. I use dark unsweetened cocoa powder (dark chocolate is good for you) and you can use Stevia in the Raw instead of sugar. One biscuit with gravy is very filling and satisfying so as a treat, it's not that bad.
Hugs and Blessings,
Cat
Oh yum! That is about all I have to say! LOL
ReplyDeleteLOL Minelle...Try it, you'll like it! ;)
DeleteYum! Thank u Cat, I must have been deprived as I hadn't heard of it . The biscuit confused me too so thank you for the explanation in the replies. A must try!
ReplyDeleteHugs
Roz
LOL Roz, scones :) We will teach people English some day ;)
DeleteHey Roz...as I told Callie, compare the recipe in the link I provided to her above and make sure your scone recipe and the biscuit recipe are the same.
DeleteIf you try this, would love to hear if you tried it with scones or biscuits and how it turned out!
Blessings,
Cat
Oh Callie...you are just too funny! Doubt if you're ever going to teach Americans to eat scones and gravy. ;)
DeleteOh yum!!! I apparently had a deprived childhood as well! ;)
ReplyDeleteSara
LOL Sara...Now you can make up for it! ;)
DeleteBlessings,
Cat
MM would want this over ice cream, after his colcannon (which we have had several times now.) :)
ReplyDeleteHey Susie...never tried it over ice cream as it is really more the consistency of gravy than chocolate sauce. If you make it, please let me know if you try it over ice cream or biscuits and what you both think.
DeleteHappy MM likes the colcannon...hope you do also since it seems to be one of his favorites. ;)
Blessings,
Cat
My sister and her family introduced this to me years ago. Yummy.
ReplyDeleteAlthough my sister is a yankee same as me, she migrated to the south over thirty years ago so her family is well engrained into these delectible treats.
Woohoo Sunny! Made a Southern girl out of a Northerner huh? *teehee*
DeleteHappy you enjoyed them...do you ever make them for yourself during your travels? ;)
Blessings,
Cat
I do make biscuits and sausage gravy once in a while. After all hubby and I did live in FL but I've only had the chocolate gravy at my sisters.
DeleteBiscuits and sausage gravy is always good Sunny! ;)
DeleteI started salivating when I read the title on my blogroll. Delightful - and I am thinking perhaps it would be good even drizzled over things like CHEESECAKE !!!
ReplyDelete:D
It's people like you who turn people like me into a lost soul!
DeleteLOL Lillie...I do love cheesecake but have never tried this on cheesecake. As I told Susie, this is gravy...much thicker than chocolate sauce. If you do try it on cheesecake, please let me know how it turns out! ;)
DeleteBlessings,
Cat
LOL Ami...considering the recipes you have published lately, don't think you need any help. ;)
DeleteOh Cat, am a bit lost over here in England, I don't think I am thinking about the same biscuits!!Jan.xx
ReplyDeleteLOL!! Scones Jan :)
DeleteYeah a united front! Only - and we had this conversation today in the staff room at school - do you say scones (as in ones) or scones (as in cones) ?!
DeleteCan you tell I've had a very big (super gi-normous) glass of chardonnay?!!!
LOL Jan...definitely not the same biscuits. ;) Our biscuits are very similar to your scones...depending on the recipes. Please look at the recipe (link in reply to Callie) and compare the ingredients and steps. If you try this, would love to know if you tried with scones or biscuits!
DeleteBlessings,
Cat
LOL Callie...you are so funny! ;)
DeleteROFLMBO Ami...please don't spill the wine on the computer!
DeleteI'll let y'all talk amongst yourselves as to the correct pronunciation of scones! ;)
@ami.... Depends on what state you are from. If you want to sound like a normal person, it's not the one that rhymes with cones.
DeleteI am soooo happy! For the first time in my life I now know what American "biscuits" are! Hooray! They are scones! Chocolate sauce on scones! Amazing! I'm off to make them now! Thanks Cat for adding to my weight problem! And I need to lose a whole stone! (Hmmm, a stone a scone...?)
ReplyDeleteHappy dance!
Hugs
Ami
LOL Ami...please stay away from the stove until the wine wears off!
DeleteJust remember to compare the recipe for biscuits (link in my reply to Callie) with your scones recipe. Also, it is chocolate gravy...much thicker than a chocolate sauce!
Hey, I just share them...not forcing you to make or eat them! :D
Keep doing your happy dance and you will lose that stone! ;)
Blessings,
Cat
Deprived indeed! Well, must not deprive my own children as my parents so obviously did me...now I know what we can make on our next snow day... LOL :-) Hugs!
ReplyDeleteAnd just think Terps...when you make them for your children, you will no longer be deprived! ;)
DeleteIf you make it, please let me know what you and your children think of this treat!
Blessings,
Cat
