Brake Fluid

~~~~~~~~~~~~
A mechanic was working under a car and some brake fluid dripped into his mouth. "Wow! That stuff isn't too bad tasting," he thought. The next day, he told his buddy about tasting the brake fluid. "It was pretty good, really. I think I'll have a little more today."
His friend was a little concerned, but didn't say anything. The next day, "Hey, I drank a whole glass of brake fluid. Great stuff! I'm going to have more." A few days later, he was up to a bottle a day.
"You know," said his buddy, "that brake fluid is poison and really bad for you. You better cut out drinking that stuff."
"Hey, no problem. I can stop any time!"
3 Wedding Nights
Three couples marry and stay at the same hotel for their honeymoons, where they are taken care of by Dave the bellboy.
The first man married a nurse. Dave thinks to himself, "Nice, nurses are known to be hot."
Honeymoon
The second man married a telephone operator. Dave thinks to himself, "Telephone operators have sexy voices."
Honeymoon
The third man married a school teacher. Dave thinks to himself, "Poor guy, teachers are too strict."
Honeymoon
The next morning, Dave reports to work and gets a room service call from the nurse's husband. He sourly says, "Don't ever marry a nurse. All I heard last night was 'You're not sanitary, you're not sanitary.'"
Then, the telephone operator's husband calls and sourly says, "Don't ever marry a telephone operator. All I heard last night was "Your three minutes are up, your three minutes are up.'"
Later that afternoon, the teacher's husband calls and happily says,
"When you marry, be sure to marry a school teacher. All I heard last night was 'We are going to do this over and over until we get it right!'"
Labor Day 2017
long holiday weekend
Although I shared the following information last year, I think it’s very much worth sharing again.
Labor Day has been celebrated as a national holiday paying tribute to working men and women in the United States and Canada since 1894.
The first Labor Day parade occurred 5 September 1882, in New York City.  The workers' unions chose the first Monday in September because it was halfway between Independence Day in July and Thanksgiving in November.
Some states designated Labor Day as a holiday before President Grover Cleveland signed a law designating the first Monday in September as the federal holiday known as Labor Day nationwide.
If you want to know more about Labor Day in the United States…what it means, where it originated, etc., this article http://www.dol.gov/laborday/history.htm has a lot of good information.
Simple Math
"A customer a few weeks ago wanted to return this hair coloring, and exchange it for a different color, right?   So I tell her, she can hand it and the receipt to me, and I can do it all in one transaction if she goes to get the one she wants and any other items she wants.
So she does, and comes back.
I do the return first because it makes the return slip that I stick in the register shorter and easier to deal with, and that way I also don't forget to do it.
The way our system lists returns is a negative value on the receipt. I think in this case it was -6.99.
That said, I still have to scan the one she's swapping it for, but it's also 6.99, which is a positive value so it all evens out, right?
Not according to her.
As far as she was concerned, I shouldn't have charged her for it at all.
And I could not get her to understand that it evens out to a zero value, even with the assistance of one of my coworkers helping explain.
She left, then she came back again, and went to cosmetics that time to try and get it corrected.
It took a manager with a calculator to finally convince her that yes, I did not charge her a value for it." (Source)
That 5.16 is not larger than 5.8.
I worked at a bank with a young coworker who thought that the staff interest rate on a term deposit of 5.8% was worse that the bank's standard rate at the time of 5.16%.
She also couldn't work out 10% of $200, even with a spreadsheet that someone made where all she had to do was enter the number 200 and then look and the large, colorful and well marked answer. (Source)
Customer: If the cucumbers are on sale 4 for $3 why should I be charged .75 cents for one?
Me: Ma'am the sale price IS .75
Customer: That's bulls--t, the other guy would give it to me for the sale price.  I want to talk to someone who knows what the hell they're talking about!
Me: Sure, let me get you a manager.
Manager: Hi ma'am what seems to be the problem?
Customer: Why the hell should I pay .75 cents for a cucumber that's on sale just because I don't want to buy 4 of them!
Manager: Ma'am if 4 cucumbers are $3 then 2 are $1.50 and one would be .75 cents.
Husband Criticizes Stay-At-Home Wife
It’s the age-old saying: The grass is always greener on the other side.
The share of stay-at-home mothers has risen since 2000 among married mothers with working husbands.  Since stay-at-home moms don’t earn an actual paycheck for the work they do, it’s not uncommon for resentments to arise between spouses who stay at home and those who go to work.
But is that really fair?  Is one “job” more important than the other?
The story below is an urban legend/long-form joke (often seen under the title, “Why A Man Should Never Complain”) that’s been circulating online for many years.  The story begins with a wife and mother who stays home and takes care of the kids and chores while her husband works a full-time job.
He goes to the office every day and works hard for his money, until one day he gets fed up with being the sole breadwinner.  He prays to God to let him switch places with his wife, so that she can know firsthand what it’s like to work so hard every day.
So, God grants him his ultimate wish — only this husband ends up getting way more than he bargained for, and learns a lesson he’ll never forget.
Wait until you see how this story ends. It’s nothing short of brilliant…
A man was sick and tired of going to work every day while his wife stayed home. He wanted her to see what he went through so he prayed.
“Dear Lord, I go to work every day and put in 8 hours while my wife merely stays at home.
I want her to know what I go through, so please allow her body to switch with mine for a day.’”
God, in his infinite wisdom, granted the man’s wish.  The next morning, sure enough, the man awoke as a woman.
He arose, cooked breakfast for his mate, awakened the kids, set out their school clothes, fed them breakfast, packed their lunches, drove them to school, came home and picked up the dry cleaning and stopped at the bank to make a deposit, went grocery shopping, then drove home to put away the groceries, paid the bills and balance the check book.
He cleaned the cat’s litter box and bathed the dogs.
Then it was already 1 P.M. and he hurried to make the beds, do the laundry, vacuum, dust, and sweep and mop the kitchen floor; ran to the school to pick up the kids and got into an argument with them on the way home.
Set out cookies and milk and got the kids organized to do their homework, then set up the ironing board and watched TV while he did the ironing.
At 4:30 he began peeling potatoes and washing vegetables for salad, breaded the pork chops and snapped fresh beans for supper.
After supper he cleaned the kitchen, ran the dishwasher, folded laundry, bathed the kids, and put them to bed.
At 9 P.M. he was exhausted and, though his daily chores weren’t finished, he went to bed where he was expected to make love which he managed to get through without complaint.
The next morning he awoke and immediately knelt by the bed and said,
“Lord, I don’t know what I was thinking.
I was so wrong to envy my wife’s being able to stay home all day. Please, oh please, let us trade back.’”
The Lord, in his infinite wisdom, replied,
“My son, I feel you have learned your lesson and I will be happy to change things back to the way they were.
You’ll just have to wait nine months, though.
You got pregnant last night.’”
Now THAT’S a punchline.  Open-mouthed smile
They Want to be Paid for That?
I was an instructor at an adult education center.  In addition to teaching classes in basic math and writing, I also helped students job search.
A great clerical opportunity came up one day for a woman in my class.  It sounded like a done deal, but they needed her to fax them her resume and cover letter.  I gave her documents a quick proofread and then sent her to the fax room.
Thirty minutes later, when she hadn't come back to class, I went looking for her.
She was still in the fax room, but now she was visibly upset. 'YOU SAID I practically had the job. YOU SAID they just wanted my resume. SO WHY DO THEY KEEP SENDING IT BACK?!'
Turns out she thought a fax machine was like a paper teleporter and she felt extremely insulted that her papers kept coming back out of the machine.
In the 30 minutes since I'd left her in the fax room, she'd sent her cover letter and resume at least 15 times.
She did not get the job.  (Source)
Surprised?
My dad called me up and asked where he could get additional fonts for his computer.
Before explaining about Google, Adobe, or free fonts, I decided to clarify. 'What type of font are you looking for?'
Dad: 'Well I just need a bigger font to make a sign at work, but the largest I have is 72pt and I think I need 150pt. Where can I download that?'
I'm glad I clarified.
Dad was so impressed that he could just click into that little window and set the font to a larger size.
Neither my Dad, his boss, or other employees knew that was possible. (Source)
The Concept of Time Zones
I used to work for a huge tech company and one of the vendors hired people so slow and stupid, they must have been exploring whole new concepts of the term 'warm body.'
One case was when our Washington DC connection to our UK offices in Bristol was down.
The tech said they took those connections offline for 'unscheduled planned maintenance.'  (first hint of an idiot)
I gave my retort that those were critical lines and the contract stated critical lines required 24 hour notice.
'Well, it's 4am, no one is at work anyway.'
'Uh, it's 10am in Bristol. No one can work.'
'Right, because it's dark outside.'
'No, it's late morning there. It is daytime and people have been at work for an hour now.'
'They work at 4am?'
'No, they work 9-4. But they can't work without the connection to our DC Offices. They are in a different time zone!'
'But it's dark outside! It's 4am in the morning. Go look!'
'It's dark HERE!! Not THERE! The sun is up there! They are 6 hours ahead of us!'
'Sir, now, how can the sun be up somewhere else? There is only one sun, okay?'
Finally I told that idiot to get a manager, a flashlight and a round object so this could be explained to him.  (Source)
Information Please
When I was quite young, my father had one of the first telephones in our neighborhood.
I remember well the polished old case fastened to the wall. The shiny receiver hung on the side of the box.
I was too little to reach the telephone, but used to listen with fascination when my mother used to talk to it.
Then I discovered that somewhere inside the wonderful device lived an amazing person – her name was “Information Please” and there was nothing she did not know. “Information Please” could supply anybody’s number and the correct time.
My first personal experience with this genie-in the-bottle came one day while my mother was visiting a neighbor.
Amusing myself at the tool bench in the basement, I whacked my finger with a hammer.  The pain was terrible, but there didn’t seem to be any reason in crying because there was no one home to give sympathy.  I walked around the house sucking my throbbing finger, finally arriving at the stairway.
The telephone!  Quickly, I ran for the foot stool in the parlor and dragged it to the landing.  Climbing up, I unhooked the receiver in the parlor and held it to my ear. “Information Please,” I said into the mouthpiece just above my head.  A click or two and a small clear voice spoke into my ear.
“Information.”
“I hurt my finger…” I wailed into the phone. The tears came readily enough now that I had an audience.
“Isn’t your mother home?” came the question.
“Nobody’s home but me.” I blubbered.
“Are you bleeding?” the voice asked.
“No,” I replied. “I hit my finger with the hammer and it hurts.”
“Can you open your icebox?” she asked.  I said I could. “Then chip off a little piece of ice and hold it to your finger,” said the voice.
After that, I called “Information Please” for everything.  I asked her for help with my geography and she told me where Philadelphia was.  She helped me with my math.  She told me my pet chipmunk, that I had caught in the park just he day before, would eat fruit and nuts.
Then, there was the time Petey, our pet canary died.  I called “Information Please” and told her the sad story.  She listened, then said the usual things grown-ups say to soothe a child.  But I was unconsoled.
I asked her, “Why is it that birds should sing so beautifully and bring joy to all families, only to end up as a heap of feathers on the bottom of a cage?”
She must have sensed my deep concern, for she said quietly, “Paul, always remember that there are other worlds to sing in.”
Somehow I felt better.
Another day I was on the telephone. “Information Please.”
“Information,” said the now familiar voice.
“How do you spell fix?” I asked.
All this took place in a small town in the Pacific Northwest.
When I was 9 years old, we moved across the country to Boston.  I missed my friend very much.  “Information Please” belonged in that old wooden box back home, and I somehow never thought of trying the tall, shiny new phone that sat on the table in the hall.
As I grew into my teens, the memories of those childhood conversations never really left me.  Often, in moments of doubt and perplexity I would recall the serene sense of security I had then. I appreciated now how patient, understanding, and kind she was to have spent her time on a little boy.
A few years later, on my way west to college, my plane put down in Seattle.  I had about half an hour or so between planes.  I spent 15 minutes or so on the phone with my sister, who lived there now.
Then without thinking what I was doing, I dialed my hometown operator and said, “Information, Please.”  Miraculously, I heard the small, clear voice I knew so well, “Information.”
I hadn’t planned this but I heard myself saying, “Could you please tell me how to spell fix?”
There was a long pause.  Then came the soft spoken answer, “I guess your finger must have healed by now.”
I laughed. “So it’s really still you,” I said. “I wonder if you have any idea how much you meant to me during that time.”
“I wonder,” she said, “if you know how much your calls meant to me.  I never had any children, and I used to look forward to your calls.”
I told her how often I had thought of her over the years and I asked if I could call her again when I came back to visit my sister.
“Please do,” she said. “Just ask for Sally.”
Three months later I was back in Seattle.  A different voice answered “Information.”
I asked for Sally.
“Are you a friend?” She said.
“Yes, a very old friend,” I answered.
“I’m sorry to have to tell you this," she said. "Sally had been working part-time the last few years because she was sick.  She died five weeks ago.”
Before I could hang up she said, “Wait a minute.  Did you say your name was Paul?"
“Yes.”
“Well, Sally left a message for you. She wrote it down in case you called.  Let me read it to you.” The note said, “Tell him I still say there are other worlds to sing in. He’ll know what I mean.”
I thanked her and hung up. I knew what Sally meant.
Never underestimate the impression you may make on others.
Cultural Diversity
A big corporation recently hired several cannibals in the interest of cultural diversity.
"You are all part of our team now," said the HR rep during the welcoming briefing. "You get all the usual benefits and you can go to the cafeteria for something to eat, but please don't eat any of the other employees."
The cannibals promised they would not.
Four weeks later, their boss remarked, "You're all working very hard and I'm satisfied with you.  However, one of our shipping clerks has disappeared.  Do any of you know what happened to her?"
The cannibals all shook their heads no.
After the boss left, the leader of the cannibals said to the others, "Which one of you idiots ate the shipping clerk?"
A hand rose hesitantly, to which the leader of the cannibals continued, "You fool…for 4 weeks we've been eating managers and no one noticed anything.  But Noooooo, you had to go and eat someone who actually does something!"
Sex in the Office
Eddie wanted desperately to have sex with this attractive girl in his office but she was dating someone else.
One day Eddie got so frustrated that he went to her and said,  “I'll give you $100 if you let me have sex with you.”
The girl looked at him, and then said, “NO!”
 Eddie then said, “I'll be real fast. I'll throw the money on the floor, you bend down and I'll finish by the time you've picked it up.”
She thought for a moment and said that she would consult her boyfriend.  So she called him and explained the situation.
Her boy friend said,  “Ask him for $200, and pick up the money really fast.  He won't even have time to get his pants down.  Call me when it’s over.”
She agreed with her boyfriend, promised to call him, went back to the coworker and accepted his proposal.
Over half an hour goes by and the boyfriend is still waiting for his girlfriend's call.  Finally, after 45 minutes the girlfriend calls and her boyfriend asks, “What took you so long?”
Still breathing hard, she managed to reply,  “The bastard had all quarters!”
The Bagpiper
Another oldie for you. Winking smile
Time is like a river. You cannot touch the water twice, because the flow that has passed will never pass again.  Enjoy every moment of life.
As a bagpiper, I play many gigs.  Recently I was asked by a funeral director to play at a graveside service for a homeless man.  He had no family or friends, so the service was to be at a pauper's cemetery in the Nova Scotia back country.
As I was not familiar with the backwoods, I got lost and, being a typical man, I didn't stop for directions. I finally arrived an hour late and saw the funeral guy had evidently gone and the hearse was nowhere in sight.  There were only the diggers and crew left and they were eating lunch.  I felt badly and apologized to the men for being late.
I went to the side of the grave and looked down and the vault lid was already in place.  I didn't know what else to do, so I started to play.  The workers put down their lunches and began to gather around.  I played out my heart and soul for this man with no family and friends.  I played like I've never played before for this homeless man.  And as I played "Amazing Grace", the workers began to weep. They wept, I wept, we all wept together.
When I finished, I packed up my bagpipes and started for my car.
Though my head was hung low, my heart was full.  As I opened the door to my car, I heard one of the workers say, "I never seen anything like that before, and I've been putting in septic tanks for twenty years."
Apparently, I'm still lost...it's a man thing.
Tough Day
An attorney arrived home late one night, after a very tough day trying to get his client a stay of execution.  His last minute plea for clemency to the governor had failed, and he was feeling worn out and depressed.
As soon as he walked through the door at home, his wife started on him:  'What time of night to be getting home is this?  Where have you been?  Dinner is cold and I'm not reheating it'.  And she carried on and on in this tone.
Too shattered to play his usual role in this familiar ritual, he poured himself a stiff drink and headed off for a long hot soak in the bathtub, pursued by the predictable sarcastic remarks of his wife as he dragged himself up the stairs.
While he was in the bath, the phone rang.  The wife answered and was told that her husband's client, James Wright, had been granted a stay of execution after all.  Wright would not be hanged that night.
Finally realizing what a terrible day he must have had, she decided to go upstairs and give him the good news.
As she opened the bathroom door, she was greeted by the sight of her husband, back toward her, bent over naked, drying his legs and feet.
'They're not hanging Wright tonight,' she said.
He whirled around and screamed, 'FOR THE LOVE OF GOD WOMAN, DON'T YOU EVER STOP?'
Quick On His Feet
Meredith’s Jack over at New Twist, After All These Years is at it again.  Hope you enjoy!
A man walked into the produce section of his local supermarket and asked to buy half a head of lettuce.
The boy working in that department told him that they only sold whole heads of lettuce.
The man was insistent that the boy ask the manager about the matter.
Walking into the back room, the boy said to the manager, "Some old bastard outside wants to buy half a head of lettuce."  As he finished his sentence, he turned around to find that the man had followed and was standing right behind him, so the boy quickly added, "...and this gentleman kindly offered to buy the other half."
The manager approved the deal and the man went on his way.  Later, the manager said to the boy...
"I was impressed with the way you got yourself out of that situation earlier; we like people who can think on their feet here.  Where are you from son?"
"New Zealand, sir," the boy replied.
"Why did you leave New Zealand?" the manager asked.
The boy said, "Sir, there's nothing but prostitutes and rugby players there."
"Is that right?" replied the manager.  "My wife is from New Zealand!"
"Really?"  replied the boy, "Who did she play for?"
Life Advice
20 Crucial Pieces of Life Advice, As Told By People Over 60.  Number 11 Is Essential.
Recently, a question was posed to those over the age of 60. The question was this: “What advice would you give to those who are half your age?” While the question seems simple, the answers may surprise you.
1. People always say, “Make sure you get a job doing what you love!” But that isn’t the best advice. The right job is the job you love some days, can tolerate most days, and still pays the bills. Almost nobody has a job they love every day.
2. Years go by in the blink of an eye. Don't marry young. Live your life. Go places. Do things. If you have the means or not. Pack a bag and go wherever you can afford to go. While you have no dependents, don't buy stuff. Any stuff. See the world. Look through travel magazines and pick a spot. GO!
3. Don’t take life so seriously. Even if things seem dark and hopeless, try to laugh at how ridiculous life is.
4. A true friend will come running if you call them at 2am; everyone else is just an acquaintance.
5. The most important person in your life is the person who agreed to share their life with you. Treat them as such.
6. Children grow up way too fast. Make the most of the time you have with them.
7. Nobody ever dies wishing they had worked more… Work hard, but don’t prioritize work over family, friends, or even yourself.
8. You might live a long life, or you might live a short one - who knows. But either way, trust me when I say that you’re going to wish you took better care of yourself in your youth.
9. If you're getting overwhelmed by life, just return to the immediate present moment and savor all that is beautiful and comforting.Take a deep breath, relax.
10. Eat and exercise like you're a diabetic heart patient with a stroke - so you never actually become one.
11. We have one time on this earth. Don't wake up and realize that you are 60 years old and haven't done the things you dreamed about.
12. Maybe this one isn’t as profound as the others, but I think it’s important… Floss regularly, dental problems are awful.
13. Don't take anyone else's advice as gospel. You can ask for advice from someone you respect, then take your situation into consideration and make your own decision. Essentially, take your own advice is my advice…
14. Stuff is just stuff. Don’t hold onto material objects, hold onto time and experiences instead.
15. The joints you damage today will get their revenge later. Even if you think they've recovered completely. TRUST ME!
16. I would say to appreciate the small things and to be present in the moment. What do I mean? Well, it seems today like younger people are all about immediate gratification. Instead, why not appreciate every small moment? We don't get to stay on this crazy/wonderful planet forever and the greatest pleasure can be found in the most mundane of activities. Instead of sending a text, pick up the phone and call someone. Call your mother, have a conversation about nothing in particular. Those are the moments to hold onto.
17. Pay your bills and stay the hell out of debt. If I could have paid myself all the money I've paid out in interest over the years, I'd be retired already.
18. Jealousy destroys relationships. Trust your significant other, because who else are you supposed to trust?
19. If you have a dream of being or doing something that seems impossible, try for it anyway. It will only become more impossible as you age and become responsible for other people.
20. When you meet someone for the first time, stop and realize that you really know nothing about them. You see race, gender, age, clothes. Forget it all. You know nothing. Those biased assumptions that pop into your head because of the way your brain likes categories, are limiting your life, and other people's lives.
