Welcome to my little corner of the world where you never know what you will find! It could be anything from a joke to a funny picture to a personal rant to a favorite recipe to an awesome quote to any random "bright idea" that pops into my mind.

The Fence
There once was a little boy who had a bad temper. His father gave him a bag of nails and told him that every time he lost his temper, he must hammer a nail into the fence.
The first day the boy had driven 37 nails into the fence.
Over the next few weeks as he learned to control his anger, the number of nails hammered daily, gradually dwindled down. He discovered it was easier to hold his temper than to drive those nails into the fence.
Finally the day came when the boy didn’t lose his temper at all. He told his father about it and the father suggested that the boy now pull out one nail for each day that he was able to hold his temper.
The days passed and the young boy was finally able to tell his father that all the nails were gone.
The father took his son by the hand and led him to the fence. He said “you have done well, my son, but look at the holes in the fence. The fence will never be the same. When you say things in anger, they leave a scar just like this one.”
You can put a knife in a person and draw it out. It won’t matter how many times you say I’m sorry, the wound is still there. Make sure you control your temper the next time you are tempted to say something you will regret later.
I had not heard this one...but it is worth remembering...thanks.

Wonderful story, it reminds me of a story of a rabbi, gossip and a feather pillow:
ReplyDeleteA Chasidic tale vividly illustrates the danger of improper speech: A man went about the community telling malicious lies about the rabbi. Later, he realized the wrong he had done, and began to feel remorse. He went to the rabbi and begged his forgiveness, saying he would do anything he could to make amends. The rabbi told the man, "Take a feather pillow, cut it open, and scatter the feathers to the winds." The man thought this was a strange request, but it was a simple enough task, and he did it gladly. When he returned to tell the rabbi that he had done it, the rabbi said, "Now, go and gather the feathers. Because you can no more make amends for the damage your words have done than you can recollect the feathers."
Hey Cygnet...thank you for sharing this story...I do love stories that paint a visual pic.

A mentor friend of mine first told me this one................. In a way, I think it's sad because, although the child has learned the lesson that words can hurt for the future, he has also learned that he can never heal the holes he already made.

Things of beauty
Nurtured by space, earth and time.
Carefully fashioned, honed and polished to perfection.
Given and passed on in love.

are diamonds...
Shattered into lethal rock hard splinters.
A thousand razors of cold hard betrayal
Tearing through trust and security,
Lodging deep into hearts and souls
Where they can never be removed.

are death.
Wow D&L...that is beautiful. Thank you so much for sharing!

Hi Cat,
ReplyDeleteWe have always told our kids to be careful of what you say & to always try to think before speaking because once you say something hurtful you can never unsay it....sometimes even if you don't mean it & it was just a thought less thing the person you say it to may always remember the hurt & have a hard time getting past the hurtful words. Thanks for sharing.
Love,
Scarlet ; )
You're welcome Scarlet...I always tried to teach my kids with visual stories like this because they seemed to understand the visual better than just words.
