Now Here's A Blast From The Past…
Talk about the good old days…look at these prices!
Go all the way to the end…be sure to look at the last line on order form!
UNBELIEVABLE! Just 80 years ago!
And made in America, too!
1934 Christmas Catalog from Montgomery Ward
Notice the last line?
Wow Cat, I can't believe these prices. I love that second house but where's the bathroom? Lisa
ReplyDeleteLOL Lisa...not all houses came with a bathroom...they built an outhouse in the back and had set up a tub for bathing in the kitchen. The first house has a bathroom on the second floor.

Cat,
ReplyDeleteThese days represent the days when women were spanked and had no way to communicate with one another afterwards. I love the prices, but not the fashions. Great post.
LOL Meredith...they had a way to communicate with their friends and family who were close by. I like some of the fashions. ;)

How on earth would a gasoline iron work I wonder? I love the price of the day old chicks though :-)
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure how they worked River but so happy I don't have to use one. :) These are good prices on everything aren't they.

Yikes! Both must sign?
ReplyDeleteLol I guess that all the quirky ways you can combine cash and credit are meant to hide what one spends! Same reason.... Handled more deceptively!
LOL Minelle...can't hide much this way can ya. ;)

I think Google is playing me up as I left a comment but didn't appear.
ReplyDeleteThe price of the chicks made me smile and same as Lisa - where's the bathroom. Thanks for sharing Cat.
Love,
Ronnie
xx
Sorry about that Ronnie...there are days Google just pure D sucks. :( The prices are something aren't they. As I told Lisa, many homes were built without bathrooms...the outhouse was built in the backyard and either a tub was installed in the corner of the kitchen or people had a small tub...either way, they were filled with water heated on the stove. Notice that the first house did have a bathroom on the second floor. ;)

Roz
Happy you enjoyed these Roz...I wouldn't mind the prices either but wouldn't really want the wages. ;)

Fun to read, Cat!! :). Loved the variety and the prices. Bras for 25 cents even.
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking that I'd get myself into a lot less trouble if that bottom line made it's way onto a thing or two around here. Lol! Interesting but not surprised that it was part of a catalog back then. Many hugs,
<3 Katie T
Happy you enjoyed it Katie...I think many couples would have a lot less trouble if that bottom line was part of their bottom line. ;)

The prices look good - what it doesn't tell you is what their salaries were.
ReplyDeleteBottom line probably helped save a lot of bottoms. :-)
Hey Sunny...as I told Roz, even though I would have enjoyed the prices, not sure I would have enjoyed the wages.
DeleteLOL...I definitely do agree with the bottom line saving a lot of bottoms. ;)

Very interesting glimpse at life 80 years ago. I'm glad we don't have to wear those type undergarments anymore, even if they were mesh, lol! I actually like a few of those shoes though :) Wow to that last line! Things sure have changed drastically since then. Not so sure for the better either! I hope you have a very happy 4th, hugs!
ReplyDeleteHey stranger! Oh yes, I sure do agree...very happy we don't have to wear those undergarments anymore. Some of the shoes and clothes are cute. I agree...some changes have been for the better but some haven't. ;) Hope you have a wonderful 4th!
